The complexity or simplicity of the distribution and storage of spare parts is based on the number of items, the physical size of each item, the number of items the amount of items required per hour/day (velocity), items cost and ability and time to replenish.
The type of facility or department you are in will dramatically effect how and to who you distribution spare parts. The type of spare parts distribution includes:
Systems and methodologies for storing and retrieving spare parts can be designed to meet each facilities unique requirement. Systems needing the highest levels of density and have light throughput requirements might use an integrated array of automated vertical storage systems (vertical carousels and/or VLMs) with basic software.
As throughput requirements increase, integrating batch picking, pick-to-light, and higher levels of inventory management software and WMS or ERP integration become better solutions. Likewise, using automated horizontal carousels will provide the highest levels of throughput, but trade off as much as 19% of the floor space savings (vertical systems can reclaim up to 85% while horizontal carousels save up to 66%).
The key is understanding the demands and requirements the system must have to meet the business objectives of the company, facility and department. By analyzing all the criteria Remstar will be able to design a system that blends the best of breed material handling equipment, software and processes to meet your needs.
