Order Consolidation

Almost every facility in manufacturing, distribution, retail and wholesale consolidates orders to one degree or another. Smaller facilities may have staged carts, an area designated on the shipping floor or tables set up to consolidate orders. While many large distribution centers can use miles of conveyors, tilt trays and cross belts to perform this function.

The size and scope of order consolidation needs to be scaled to an operation and to make sure it’s neither a bottleneck nor cause of quality defects.

Order consolidation becomes vital to an organization when its order volume, SKU count, number of lines per order or physical size of an order dictate that the facility must use multiple picking zones to be efficient.
