Used in multiple zone picking operations. Parallel picking is a process in which a wave of orders is released for picking to each work zone. Items are picked from each zone simultaneously and transported to an area for consolidation. This allows each zone to work efficiently, but provides challenges in buffering or staging all the parts of an order until the last part of an order arrives at consolidation.
Used in medium to large distribution centers. This method allows for large growth in comparison to the alternative Pick & Pass method.
Other methods are too slow or constrictive when a facility has substantial SKU and order velocity. Each pick zone can use best of breed material handling solutions for its SKU profile. Fast movers, slow and medium movers, can have equipment, labor and velocity balanced to meet the facilities business needs.
The need for understanding the business plan, objectives and financial realities are required to do an analysis to determine the best integrated solution. Special attention needs to be given not only to the equipment used in the picking zones, but also the floor space and investment required in buffering and consolidation.
