Each organization must determine whether it is more efficient to have multiple central storage areas based on application such as manufacturing parts, MRO (maintenance repair operations), spare parts, etc or to combine different areas or to use point-of-use storage concept.

The advantages of central storage is a reduction of total inventory since it doesn’t have to be stocked throughout a facility and the ability to have fewer dedicated employees manage on inventory rather than multiple. The negatives include wasted walk and fetch time by employees having to get an item, this area can become a bottleneck based on timing of multiple demands and the cost of dedicated storage employees managing the process.
